What is SEO?
October 2, 2013
Google recently announced that it will be using a new algorithm called “Hummingbird”. Actually, Google has been using the new algorithm for a little over a month now, but officially announced the new addition on the 26th of September. Because any algorithm change Google makes is news for Charleston SEOs and for Charleston SEO clients, we have listed a few FAQ’s below about Hummingbird.
Firstly, what does the word algorithm mean?
Google’s algorithms are the tools it uses to sort through the billions of website pages that it has indexed, in order to present you with the best results for your search.
Is the introduction of Hummingbird a good thing?
Because Hummingbird was so recently introduced, it’s hard to give a definitive answer of “yes” to this question. What we can tell you is that it’s not a bad thing. Think of it like this – if we were to liken this algorithm change to a car, the car just got a fresh oil change, rotation of tires, and upgraded engine.
Google has said that the Hummingbird update will be able to give users better search results, but only time will tell.
Is Google worse off because of the new Hummingbird algorithm?
In the short time that Hummingbird has been out, there have not been any egregious complaints about it which indicates that while things aren’t overtly different, they are not bad either. Almost every change that Google makes can have an impact on an SEO campaign, but professional and experienced SEO’s are prepared for change.
Does this signal the death of Charleston SEO?
It seems that when Google makes any changes to how it works a slew of articles pop up claiming that the death of Search Engine Optimization is imminent. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Google’s stance remains the same, in that as long as you have high-quality, original content that is popular across the web that your keyword rankings will go up. The many signals that Google relies on do change as well as the emphasis on certain signals, but that has always been the case for over a decade now.
There is some exciting news for Charleston SEO companies and SEO’s around the Country that just came out in a few studies recently. That news is that a website’s number of Google+1s can increase search rankings for a client more than Facebook shares, and even more than the use of specific, targeted keywords.
But can activity on the Google+ platform actually get you results that can be measured? Will your page rankings go up with increased activity, and will you acquire more clients? It seems that the answer to this question is yes.
SEO Results for Google vs. Facebook
While there is no concrete evidence to show that Facebook activity and higher page rankings are directly related, with Google+ we seem to be moving past correlation and moving on to causation when it comes to posting on Google+ and achieving higher page rankings. Unlike Facebook, there are measurable SEO advantages associated with Google+. There are a few different factors that make sharing content on Google+ more beneficial than other social media sites.
Passing Google Page Rank AKA Link JuiceSharing content on Google+ provides authority, but it also passes link equity because those links are follow me links. This is unique to Google + since almost all social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and Pinterest have a blanket use of rel=”nofollow” an attribute that makes links invisible to search engines.
Any Post Submitted to Google + will be Indexed within 24 HoursOne of the great things about using Google+ is that when you share a URL on the platform, it is indexed very fast. While Facebook and Twitter hide links from Google using rel=”nofollow”, thus not allowing Google to follow links and discover content shared on those social sites, in contrast Google + was designed to be a content sharing and content discovery platform that would provide social signals to better evaluate websites in Google search results.
Sharing Content without ConnectionsWith almost all social media sites you only see content in your feed if you are connected or friends with that person, however, with Google + you can see popular content being shared by Google + users even if the author is not a connection or friend. This creates a powerful and open forum for sharing unique content and this is a great opportunity for your Charleston SEO campaign.

What is the first thing that you think of when you hear the word crawl? A lot of people would say “a baby crawling” or perhaps “traffic” as in “the accident up ahead has caused traffic to come to a slow crawl.” Still others may say “creepy crawlers” or “bugs” as they absently scratch at their arms in an effort to detach invisible insects brought on by an active imagination.
The first thing that a Charleston SEO thinks about when they hear the word crawl isn’t cute like a baby or creepy like a insect. It’s Google. That’s because Google, which is by far the largest and most powerful search engine in the World today, “crawls” websites, essentially reading them from page to page at unfathomable speeds.
Copies are made of these pages and stored in a giant “index”, kind of like a digital roladex of webpages on the internet. When a person searches for something on Google, the search engine flips through all of the relevant pages in that roladex and picks out which one it thinks will be the best one to show you first.
If you are a business owner, you obviously want to be the website that Google chooses to show first in search results. But if you want Google to find your site and rank it highly in search results, it has to be in the rolodex. And to be in the rolodex your site must be crawled. And for your site to be crawled completely, it needs to be error-free.
A Large number of people search everyday for the services or products that your business offers. Ranking highly on Google brings with it the potential to earn significantly higher amounts of income, especially if you have never had your site audited or optimized by a seasoned Charleston SEO expert. This audit helps fix those nasty errors that cause Google to stop crawling your website and the pages within your website that are important to your business.
Finding and correcting mistakes on your website is only one part of an in-depth SEO campaign, which if done correctly with the use of extensive knowledge and innovative marketing techniques, will result in top rankings.
At Matthew Rubin Marketing Services, we want to help your website rank highly on Google, so that you can gain new customers to grow your business. Give our office a call when you are ready to find out more about how we can help push your business to a new level of success.
